"Remember the K-Mart blue light special? It was created in 1965 by a store manager looking to move slow merchandise and quickly became part of the American lexicon.

Years ago I recall tooling around K-Mart with my mom, shopping for back to school clothes, when all of a sudden an announcer would blurt out those now famous words, “Attention K-Mart shoppers, there’s a blue light special on . . .”

So I wanted to practice running in hot weather, and on a hilly track so I'm well prepared for the race in Hickory, NC in 4 weeks. Well, today I had excellent practice and it was very tough. I ran 14.3 miles, with an average speed of 13.3 minutes/mile, well below my usually speed. The track was very hilly and the heat made it hard.

I was originally planning to run 12.5 miles but I took a wrong turn so I ran the airport spurt of the track which added another 2.73 miles.

Yesterday evening I went for a long run and it felt great. I ran 5.5 miles in 65 minuten; I had to take a walk brake close to the end since my stomach got upset but it was a great run. 11.8 minutes/mile

My new shoes are working nicely. I went for a walk with them twice earlier this week. I could feel my left knee a little bit, the same as what I felt when I bought the previous shoes, but it quickly disappeared.

One of my training rules is that I always take at least a day off between two runs, to prevent injuries. I sort of broke that rule now but yesterday's run was slow and relaxed, with lots of walk breaks.

A good time, I thought, 37:39. My lower right hurt, around the hip bone, perhaps I started too quickly.

The run was nice. However, I started at 7.30 pm and I was pretty hungry, so I didn't feel like exploring a new, slightly longer route.

I went for a relaxing run this afternoon. It's 63 degrees, I'm sure it will get hot soon here.

The first weekend after my half marathon, and I felt strong. I think I'm recovered. Still it's a healthy habit to take it easy every other weekend.

Last Friday I went for a run and it was very tiring. It was the first time this year I ran in warm weather again (it gets hot in NC!) and it was exhausting. I finished in 38:30 minutes. Monday it was raining and a bit colder and even though I took it slow I easily finished in 37:30.

Tonight things didn't go well at all, I had to walk! That hasn't happened in many months. I think I started too enthusiastically. Anyway, I didn't want to push it too hard because... Saturday is the race! I forgot to pick up my stuff today but I can do it Friday also.
