In 1991 President George Bush Sr. proclaimed November 16th to be Dutch-American Heritage Day, a day to celebrate the historic ties and mutual friendship between the Netherlands and the United States.

Historical significance

On that day in 1776 the Governor of St. Eustatius ordered a salute to a warship of the United States, making the Netherlands the first foreign power to officially salute the flag of the newly-independent United States.

This quaint store is located on the waterfront in Old-Town Alexandria. This small store is packed with coffee, sweets and goodies from all over the world, and has a respectable selection of Dutch products.

They sell King pepermunt, speculaas, dropjes, stroopwafels, ontbijtkoek, wybertjes, hagelslag and some Indonesian items like ketjap.

The lady at the counter explained that through the years they started carrying more and more Dutch products, especially since the Dutch club added an advertisement for the store in its magazine.

My name is Nyssa Bulkes, and I am a graduate-student researcher at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. I am seeking Dutch heritage speakers for a linguistics study I am currently working on. I understand that as a Dutch heritage center, some of the members in your community might fit this description. Would you be willing to forward this notice to your members, and ask them if anyone has spoken Dutch as a first-generation American or Dutch-American immigrant, and they know Dutch fluently, that I would be very appreciative if they contacted me?

The study poses no risk for participants, and participation would require about 30 minutes of time filling out two surveys online.

Please let me know if you'd be willing to forward this message. I would be happy to give you more information if you like.

Thank you for your time!
